LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER: DEMOCRACY IS NOT A PRIVILEGE OF A FEW
In conclusion of Vilnius Conference “Common Vision for Common Neighborhood” Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis underlined that the spread of democracy in the last twenty years had acquired an irreversible character.
„I believe we all have agreed that democracy is not a privilege of a few. The idea that only selected parts of Europe deserve democracy due to their historical, cultural and religious tradition does not hold true,” the Minister said.
According to Minister Valionis, successful enlargement of the EU and NATO encouraged other countries of Eastern Europe to introduce democratic reforms. Though the EU and NATO show active support for the democratic processes, instruments for promoting democracy do not always correspond the needs and expectations of the new democracies.
“It is already clear that reforms in Ukraine and Georgia will open the door for the EU and NATO membership. We have to define this perspective in mutually acceptable terms. The question is not “if”, but “how” the open-door policy will be implemented,” the Head of Lithuanian Diplomacy stated.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister also drew attention of the participants of Vilnius Conference to the significance of regional cooperation especially the Community of Democratic Choice for promoting European and transatlantic integration.
“Regional cooperation should help to complete the vision of Europe whole and free,” Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis concluded.
