LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER CONGRATULATES MOLDOVA ON THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF ITS INDEPENDENCE
On 27 August, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis congratulated Moldova on the 20th anniversary of its Independence and emphasized good and mutually beneficial relations, and the importance of further cooperation.
In the congratulatory letter to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Moldova Iurie Leanca, A.Ažubalis wrote that the European project was still not complete and that was why Lithuania would always remain true and sound supporter of Moldova’s path of European integration and democratic reforms.“I am confident that only by ensuring democratic freedoms, by encouraging citizens’ initiatives, entrepreneurship and civic participation, by fighting corruption and respecting human rights we can build strong, free and undivided Europe,” the letter to Iurie Leanca reads.
Moldova was the first former Soviet republic that recognized the Independence of Lithuania on 31 May 1990.
“Our nations stood shoulder to shoulder in the struggle for Independence in the late 1980’s and the beginning of 1990s. Because of our and other Central and Eastern European nations’ fight for freedom and democracy, Europe today is safer and more democratic,” A.Ažubalis wrote in the letter.
Moldova declared its Independence from the Soviet Union on 27 August 1991.
