LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER CONFIRMED LITHUANIA’S INTENTION TO SUPPORT UKRAINE’S EURO-ATLANTIC ASPIRATIONS

On 14 November Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis who was on a visit to Kiev met with the President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko and discussed bilateral relations, the importance of regional cooperation development, relations between the European Union and Ukraine.

Foreign Minister also met with the Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Stanislav Stashevsky, Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Borys Tarasyuk and the Secretary of the Council of National Security and Defence of Ukraine Anatoliy Kinakh.

Ukrainian officials informed Lithuanian Minister about topicalities of Ukraine’s internal policy. They assured that recent changes in the Government would not influence the course of democratic reforms and European and Euro-Atlantic integration chosen by Ukrainian people.

Minister Valionis noted that free and fair parliamentary elections in March 2006 would reaffirm Ukraine’s determination to cherish democratic values.

In discussions with Ukrainian officials special attention was paid to the EU-Ukraine leaders’ meeting in Kiev on 1 December. Both parties expressed their conviction that this meeting would help to strengthen EU-Ukrainian relations and would stimulate discussions on EU membership possibilities for Ukraine. Minister Valionis assured that Lithuania is ready to offer assistance both in European and in Euro-Atlantic integration spheres.

Lithuanian Minister also discussed with Ukrainian officials The Community’s of democratic choice meeting in Kiev on 1-2 December. Both parties agreed that the cooperation of the Baltic and the Black Sea countries would be continued and next meeting of the Community would be organized in Vilnius in 2006.

The problems of Ukraine’s accession to the World Trade Organization and the importance of membership for bilateral and multilateral relations was also touched upon. Attention was paid to active Lithuanian-Ukrainian political and economic cooperation, plans to organize visits of Ukrainian Prime Minister and Foreign Minister to Lithuania were considered.
