Lithuanian Foreign Minister completes visit to the United States
On the last day of the visit to the United States, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the U.S. Vice President Joe Biden.
During the meeting that was held in the margins of the Atlantic Council’s conference, L.Linkevičius and J.Biden discussed issues on the U.S.-Lithuania agenda formed by the President of Lithuania and the U.S. Vice President during his recent visit to the country.
The Lithuanian Foreign Minister also held a meeting with the Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs Ed Royce.
During the conversation, the officials discussed the threat posed by Russia’s aggressive actions in Ukraine to regional security, as well as challenges to energy security. E.Royce briefed the Lithuanian Foreign Minister that the House Energy and Commerce Committee had approved the law on liberalization of LNG exports right before their meeting. The bill is put on a calendar to be voted on by the U.S. House of Representatives in the short run.
L.Linkevičius noted that a positive decision of the U.S. Congress on liberalization of LNG exports was especially important for Lithuania and other countries in Central and Eastern Europe, which sought to diversify their energy resources as much as possible, reducing dependence on one supplier of energy.
The Lithuanian Foreign Minister also raised issues related to opening the U.S. market for food products, especially meat products, from Lithuania. L.Linkevičius visited the U.S. Department of Agriculture and said that Lithuanian services had submitted all necessary information and expected the U.S. administration to make a quick decision on exports of Lithuanian meat products to the U.S.
