LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER CALLS FOR TURNING THE 2012 U-17 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN KAUNAS INTO A SUCCESSFUL EVENT

On 8 March at the presentation of the project “All colours of basketball”, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis invited foreign representations to help organising the largest international basketball event in Lithuania this year. Foreign diplomats were invited to join the project in order to turn the FIBA Under-17 World Championship into a successful basketball and cultural event in Kaunas this summer.

“This is an opportunity not only to present our country, but also to show respect for Lithuania – a country where basketball symbolizes love of freedom and solidarity,” Ažubalis said during the presentation of the event at the Foreign Ministry.

Lithuanian Basketball Federation, in cooperation with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), is organizing the Under-17 World Championship on 29 June-9 July in Kaunas Žalgirio Arena. At the Championship, the Lithuanian host team will compete with other young players from Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, France, South Korea, Spain and the U.S.

“We all have a common goal. We want to show Lithuania’s hospitality and openness. We will be happy to be able to grant best conditions for all basketball teams to train, compete, rest, travel around our beautiful country and, of course, celebrate their victories,” Ažubalis said.

He stressed that the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was ready to continue its successful cooperation with the Lithuanian Basketball Federation, which lasted for several years when the Ministry and Federation joined efforts to present in foreign countries the European Basketball Championship that took place in Lithuania in 2011.
