LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER BIDS FAREWELL TO THE OUTGOING AMBASSADOR OF CANADA

On 3 January, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis bade farewell to the outgoing Ambassador of Canada to Lithuania Scott Heatherington and thanked him for his contribution to bilateral relations. Ažubalis stressed Canada’s active participation in the activities of the Community of Democracies when Lithuania chaired the organisation. According to the Minister, Canada’s constructive participation helped to revive activities of this organization.

The meeting discussed the extension of the NATO air police mission in the Baltic States. Participants exchanged opinions on the participation of Canada and Lithuania in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) operation in Afghanistan.

The Ambassador congratulated the Minister on the country’s successful Chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in 2011.

When speaking about Lithuania’s upcoming Presidency of the European Union in the second half of 2013, the Minister stressed that the strengthening of transatlantic relations would be among the priorities of the Lithuanian Presidency.

S.Heatherington was appointed as Canada’s diplomatic representative to Lithuania on 17 September 2008.

The Embassy of Canada for the three Baltic States is situated in Riga with the office of the Embassy to Lithuania established in Vilnius.
