Lithuanian Foreign Minister begins his visit to New York with bilateral meetings

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius on 22 September in New York met with Foreign Ministers of Australia, Turkey and Eritrea to discuss international issues and bilateral cooperation. Minister L.Linkevičius is on a visit to New York,  where the General Debate of the General Assembly of the United Nations is held this week.

In the meeting with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Australia Julie Bishop, L.Linkevičius stressed Lithuania‘s goal to open accession talks with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), discussed opportunities for developing bilateral cooperation, international security and the situation in Ukraine. Australia’s Foreign Minister hailed successful collaboration of both countries within the UN Security Council. The Foreign Minister L.Linkevičius informed the Australian Foreign Minister about his plans to visit Australia and invited her to Lithuania.

With the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, L.Linkevičius discussed bilateral political and economic relations, exchanged opinions on the need to strengthen economic ties. The Foreign Ministers agreed to continue to cooperate in international and regional organizations and underlined the need to jointly strive for a smooth implementation of the decisions of NATO Summit in Wales. The Foreign Ministers discussed the situation in Ukraine, in particular that of the Crimean Tatars. L.Linkevičius invited the Turkish Foreign Minister to visit Lithuania.

The meeting with Osman Saleh Mohammed, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Eritrea, focused on the UN Security Council agenda. The issue of sanctioning Eritrea is included on the agenda of the Security Council. Lithuania is a non-permanent member of Security Council for the 2014-2015 term.
