Lithuanian Foreign Minister and Vice-Minister to attend Foreign Affairs Council and General Affairs Council in Luxembourg

On 23-24 June, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius and the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Vytautas Leškevičius will be attending the Foreign Affairs Council and the General Affairs Council in Luxembourg.

On 23 June, L.Linkevičius will attend the Foreign Affairs Council meeting, during which the Foreign Ministers will discuss developments in Ukraine, events in Southern neighbourhood and the situation in Iraq.

The Foreign Ministers will dedicate most attention to events in Ukraine. They will discuss the situation in the Syrian conflict after the June 3 presidential elections, the tense internal political and complex security situation in Libya, results of Egypt’s 26-27 May presidential elections.

On 24 June in Luxembourg, the Lithuanian Foreign Vice-Minister Vytautas Leškevičius will participate in the General Affairs Council meeting. The meeting will prepare for the upcoming European Council meeting on 26-27 June, which will focus on energy security, the area of freedom, security and justice, and will hold a debate on a European Energy Security Strategy, which is an integral part of a policy framework for climate and energy in the period from 2020 to 2030.

The Council is also expected to endorse the 18-month programme of the Council drawn up by the incoming trio of presidencies (Italy, Latvia and Luxembourg), approve draft country’s specific recommendations, adopt the EU maritime security strategy and conclusions in terms of whether to grant candidate status to Albania. The Foreign Ministers will as well as discuss the EU strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian region, on the basis of a presentation by the Commission. Finally, the Presidency will report on the implementation of European Council conclusions.
