LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER AND HIS FRENCH COUNTERPART DISCUSS IMPORTANT ISSUES RELATED TO BILATERAL COOPERATION AND INTERNATIONAL POLICY

On 28 October, the Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius thanked the Minister of Foreign Affairs of France Laurent Fabius, who is paying a visit to Vilnius, for France’s support to Lithuania’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, active participation of the French Air Forces in NATO’s air policing mission in the Baltic States and in the upcoming NATO Exercise Steadfast Jazz in November in the Baltic region. The two Ministers welcomed the excellent state of bilateral relations.

L.Fabius congratulated Lithuania on winning a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council. He also welcomed Lithuania’s fruitful Presidency of the EU Council and wished every success in the future. According to L.Fabius, France supports Lithuania’s aim to continue to develop the Eastern Partnership and expects good results at the Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius at the end of November.

The meeting discussed key international policy issues, such as the situation in Syria, Egypt and negotiations with Iran. L.Fabius called for European solidarity when addressing international policy issues, because this was the only way to achieve great results.

L.Fabius came to Vilnius to attend the 50th anniversary session of the Conference of Community and European Affairs Committees of Parliaments of the European Union (COSAC) at the Seimas (Parliament) of Lithuania. L.Fabius is the founder of the forum.

During his visit to Vilnius, the French Foreign Minister also met with the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė and the Speaker of the Seimas Loreta Graužinienė.

Lithuania and France are strategic partners from 2009. Since 2011, the countries have intensified their cooperation, particularly in the areas of military and defence.
