LITHUANIAN-FINNISH BILATERAL RELATIONS WERE DISCUSSED IN VILNIUS

On 29 March Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis met with the Trade and Development Minister of Finland Paula Lehtomaki who was on a one-day working visit to Lithuania and discussed the removal of restrictions on work force movement to Finland.

“Lithuania has always strived for its citizens to take full advantage of the European Union but we also want Lithuanians, who leave to work and live in other EU countries, to be interested to return, not break ties with their native land,” Minister Valionis said.

Minister Lehtomaki also introduced priorities of Finnish European Union Presidency in second half of 2006.

The Ministers discussed Lithuania’s and Finland’s position on European Union’s internal and external relations policy, talked about bilateral efforts to solve important problems of internal market functioning, neighbourhood policy and other. Finnish Minister offered help in increasing Lithuania’s administrational capabilities in the development policy sphere. Minister Valionis proposed to organize a meeting of experts.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister and Finnish Minister of Trade and Development also considered the new Financial Perspective of the EU.

“The period of the new Financial Perspective will be a period of crucial growth for Lithuania, when we should concentrate all efforts and use successfully the funds we receive,” the Head of Lithuanian Diplomacy stated.

Finnish Minister Lehtomaki also met with members of Foreign and European Affairs Committee of Lithuanian Seimas, delivered a lecture at the Institute of Political Sciences and International Relations of Vilnius University.
