LITHUANIAN EMBASSY IN MINSK TO PERFORM FUNCTIONS OF NATO MISSION IN BELARUS

As of 1 September, the Lithuanian Embassy to the Republic of Belarus assumed functions of a contact NATO embassy in Belarus for a period of two years. A contact embassy is an informal mission of NATO. Its main task is to inform the general public, mass media, academic institutions and communities of its country of residence on the Alliance’s activities, goals and objectives. One of the major functions of a contact embassy is encouragement of cooperation between its country of residence and NATO and assistance in organising visits of the Alliance’s officials. NATO contact embassies function in 21 non-member countries of the Alliance. This status is sought by many embassies of NATO states. Opportunity to represent the Alliance is viewed as a very honourable task. Lithuania was selected to represent NATO in Belarus in the end of July at the session of NATO Committee on Information and Cultural Relations. Policy analysts have evaluated this appointment as a big achievement of the Lithuanian diplomacy.
