LITHUANIAN DISCUS THROWER IS INAUGURATED A UNESCO CHAMPION FOR SPORT

On 23 November at 18:00 h., during the solemnities at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) headquarters in Paris, Director General of UNESCO Koïchiro Matsuura will inaugurate Lithuanian discus thrower Virgilijus Alekna a UNESCO champion for sport.

This title was awarded to the sportsman on 31 July for his activity of promoting sport at schools.

The title of a UNESCO champion for sport will commit V.Alekna to participate efficiently in the activities of this organisation. V.Alekna is obliged to promote physical education and sports, so that it would become an integral part of education system, contributing to the promotion of ethnic and social values.

This title has been already awarded to Belgian tennis player Justine Henin-Hardenne, Ukrainian boxing champions Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko and pole-vaulter Serhiy Bubka, Russian ice hockey player Viacheslav Fetisov, German automobile racer Michael Schumacher racer Michael Schumacher, Brazilian football legend Pelé and French Olympic judo champion David Douillet.

These high-level sportsmen contribute to the promotion of UNESCO values in the world.
