LITHUANIAN DIPLOMATS AND BUSINESSMEN FOSTER RELATIONS WITH URUGUAY

On 29 October, the Lithuanian delegation led by State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) Evaldas Ignatavičius visited Uruguay. Evaldas Ignatavičius met with Uruguay’s MFA Vice Minister Guillermo Valles Galmes, Vice Chairman of the House of Representatives Enrique Pintado and Chairman of the Congress’ Commission of International Affairs Carlos Julio Pereira. At the meeting with the country’s MFA officials, bilateral Lithuanian-Uruguayan relations, issues of international politics and trade, course of regional processes in Europe and Latin America and supporting of Lithuania’s candidature to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) were discussed. MFA Secretary Ignatavičius expressed gratitude for the Uruguay inter-war policy of non-recognition of Lithuania’s annexation and the possibility for the Lithuanian embassy to function in Montevideo after Lithuania’s occupation. At the meeting with the members of Parliament, proposal to establish Lithuanian-Uruguayan interparliamentary relations group was put forward. The Lithuanian businessmen, accompanying the MFA State Secretary, met with the Presidents of the Uruguay Import and Export Development Agency “URUGUAY XXI” and the Southern Seas Agency. The Lithuanian Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Crafts and the Uruguayan Chamber of Commerce signed cooperation agreements. During the visit, MFA State Secretary Ignatavičius also met with members of the Lithuanian community in Uruguay.
