Lithuanian diplomat to head EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia
Ambassador Kęstutis Jankauskas, Permanent Representative of Lithuania to NATO, has been appointed as new Head of Mission for the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia.
“I am glad that EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini appointed Ambassador K.Jankauskas, Permanent Representative of Lithuania to NATO, a great professional, as new Head of the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia. This appointment also shows the appreciation of Lithuania’s diplomatic service,” said Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius.
The Political and Security Committee of the European Union adopted this decision on 19 December. K.Jankauskas will succeed Toivo Klaar.
The EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia is an unarmed civilian monitoring mission supporting the stabilization of the situation on the ground, centered on full compliance with the six-point agreement signed by Georgia and Russia in August 2008. The Mission contributes to the reduction of tensions through liaison, facilitation of contacts between parties and other confidence-building measures.
This is the first time when a Lithuanian diplomat was appointed to head an EU CSDP mission.
