LITHUANIAN DIPLOMACY CELEBRATES 85TH ANNIVERSARY

On 7 November, the Diplomatic Service of the Republic of Lithuania will celebrate its 85th anniversary. After the reestablishment of Lithuania’s independence in the beginning of the 20th century, the state recognised the necessity to establish a diplomatic service that would consolidate its statehood in the international community. In order to achieve this goal, on 3 November 1918 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was established under the decision of the Lithuanian State Council. On 7 November of the same year – 85 years ago – the leader of the first Lithuanian Interim Government, Professor Augustinas Voldemaras, also took up the post of the Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs. Thus, 7 November 1918 signifies the date of the beginning of the Lithuanian Diplomatic Service. To commemorate this date, on 13-14 November the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania and the Institute of International Relations and Political Science of Vilnius University holds a series of events meant to honour the Lithuanian Diplomacy.
