On January 22, Deputy Foreign Minister Giedrius Čekuolis met with Slovakian Defense Minister Josef Stank, who was on an official visit in Vilnius.
The issues of NATO enlargement and bilateral Lithuanian - Slovakian relations were discussed at the meeting. Deputy Minister Čekuolis noted that Lithuania and Slovakia are members of the Vilnius group and have the same goal and the feeling of solidarity seeking membership in the Alliance. The Lithuanian Deputy Minister briefed the Slovakian delegation on the results of the visit of Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus to the US.
The Slovakian Defense Minister underscored that the events of September 11 consolidated the need for collective defence and NATO enlargement. Minister Stank indicated that Slovakia is optimistic about the enlargement of NATO and hopes that both states will be invited in Prague. The Minister also told about the military reform carried out in Slovakia, modernization of the Army and plans of professional Army formation.
Political situation in Slovakia and upcoming Parliamentary elections were also discussed at the meeting.
