LITHUANIAN DELEGATION GETS ACQUAINTED WITH CZECH AND POLISH EXPERIENCE IN SOLVING JEWISH HERITAGE ISSUES

On 3-4 June, the Lithuanian delegation including Lithuania’s Deputy Minister Justas Paleckis, Chairman of the Board of the Jewish Heritage Fund Emanuelis Zingeris, Presidential Advisor Julius Šmulkštys, Prime Minister’s Advisor Vilius Kavaliauskas, representatives of Vilnius local authorities and mass media visited Czech Republic and Poland on the initiative of Lithuania’s Jewish Heritage Fund. During the visit, the Lithuanian delegation got acquainted with the Czech and Polish experience in addressing the issues of Jewish heritage, rebuilding and administrating Jewish living quarters in old towns. In Krakow, the Lithuanian representatives met with Malopolska’s Voivod Jerzy Adamik and Director of the Judaica Foundation Joachim Russek and visited the rebuilt Jewish quarter Kazimierz. In Warsaw the Lithuanian delegation had a meeting with Director of Poland’s Jewish Historical Institute Eleonora Bergman, representatives of the Jewish Historical Museum and Jewish Heritage Protection Fund. According to Justas Paleckis, the Lithuanian delegation became familiar with the European ways of Jewish property restitution and experience of rebuilding of Jewish quarters in Czech Republic and Poland. “Such experience is of great importance for Lithuania when addressing similar problems and integrating into European structures” the Deputy Minister stated.
