LITHUANIAN CONSUL GENERAL IN NEW YORK PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE HOLOCAUST VICTIMS

On 27 January, Lithuanian Consul General in New York Valdemaras Sarapinas and representatives from other countries paid tribute to the Holocaust victims. V.Sarapinas took part in the commemoration that was co-organized by the Consulate General of Italy and the Italian Cultural Institute of New York. At the event, names were read of about eight thousand Italian Jews, who were killed in the Nazi concentration camps in Auschwitz.

In 2005, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on Holocaust remembrance and called for the designation of 27 January as an annual International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. On the 27th of January 1945 the Auschwitz death camp in Poland was liberated. In Auschwitz, the Nazis killed 1.5 million people, nearly 1.1 million of them were Jews.
