LITHUANIAN AND UKRAINIAN FOREIGN MINISTERS DISCUSS ISSUES OF EUROPEAN AND EURO-ATLANTIC INTEGRATION OF THIS COUNTRY
At the end of his tenure, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Petras Vaitiekūnas met with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Volodymyr Ogryzko on 9 December.
V.Ogryzko visited Lithuania as a member of the delegation headed by President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko.
P.Vaitiekūnas indicated that during the latter years, active cooperation between Lithuania and Ukraine had good results, which today obtained a form of the strategic partnership document, signed by Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus and President V.Yushchenko.
This document outlines guidelines of strategic partnership in 2009-2010 and foresees concrete actions of the countries for the development of strategic partnership.
P.Vaitiekūnas encouraged V.Ogryzko to continue Ukraine’s efforts of European and Euro-Atlantic integration, disregarding possible changes in Ukraine’s home politics and external pressure. He also expressed a belief that one day Ukraine would become an EU and NATO member state.
V.Ogryzko indicated that Lithuania was one of the first countries that had offered concrete assistance for Ukraine’s European and Euro-Atlantic goals and thanked for the country’s active support while defending Ukrainian interests and sharing experience of integration.
