LITHUANIAN AND SWISS FOREIGN MINISTERS DISCUSSED GUIDELINES FOR THE PROMOTION OF COOPERATION

On 11 October in Vilnius, Lithuania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis and head of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs Micheline Calmy-Rey discussed the bilateral and multilateral cooperation and the joint projects in the areas of public health and development cooperation.

Minister A.Ažubalis thanked Switzerland for its long-term assistance to Lithuania, emphasizing not just financial support, but also the importance of sharing experience and knowledge.

The greatest amount of support under the programme of the Swiss-Lithuanian cooperation is allocated to Lithuania’s health care institutions. Currently, the financial Swiss support to Lithuania’s ongoing and future projects amounts to 115 million Litas.

Foreign Minister A.Ažubalis acquainted the Swiss Foreign Minister with the plans of Lithuania’s chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in 2011 and invited M.Calmy-Rey to the foreign ministers’ meeting of the Community of Democracies in the summer of 2011 in Vilnius.

The Ministers agreed to cooperate more closely on current issues of the international agenda and to maintain closer relations in the context of Lithuania’s OSCE chairmanship.

Foreign Minister A.Ažubalis invited Switzerland to contribute to the financing of the European Humanities University, which functions in Vilnius.
