Lithuanian and Swedish Foreign Ministers voice support for reforms in Ukraine
On 17 November, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius and the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden Margot Wallström paid a joint visit to Ukraine and met with the Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, who thanked the Baltic and Nordic countries for supporting Ukraine.
Linkevičius stressed that Lithuania condemned Russian aggression and was concerned that military activity had once again increased in eastern Ukraine at the time when the international community rallied after the Paris terrorist attacks. Some Ukrainian soldiers have been killed or wounded in the last few days.
“We welcome and support the implementation of reforms in Ukraine, including the adoption of legislation that will bring the citizens of Ukraine closer to the goal of a visa free regime with the European Union,” said Lithuania’s Foreign Minister.
During the visit, the Foreign Ministers also plan to meet with the Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin, politicians, representatives of civil society and non-governmental organizations. The Foreign Ministers will also meet with students of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and will visit an assistance centre, which helps victims of violence in eastern Ukraine.
During the visit, the Lithuanian and Swedish Foreign Ministers will also sign a Memorandum of Understanding to support schools in eastern Ukraine.
