Lithuanian and Swedish Foreign Ministers sign maritime boundary agreement
Foreign Minister of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius and Swedish Foreign Minster Carl Bildt signed the Agreement between the Government of Lithuania and the Government of Sweden on the Delimitation of the Exclusive Economic Zone and the Continental Shelf in the Baltic Sea in Stockholm on 10 April.
“Sweden is Lithuania’s close neighbour and partner. Today we have legalised our former symbolic neighbourhood de juri by our signatures. The sea boundary between Lithuania and Sweden is not long, about 15 kilometres, however, this agreement is of great significance to us from the geopolitical point of view”, Linas Linkevičius stated.
President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė and Prime Minister of Sweden Fredrik Reinfeldt participated in the signing ceremony of the agreement.
During the bilateral meeting that was held before the signing of the agreement Lithuanian and Swedish Foreign Ministers discussed the situation in Ukraine, the possibilities of providing assistance to that country, the issues of security and defence of the Baltic Sea Region and bilateral cooperation.
During the visit the Minister also took part in the seminar devoted to the 10th anniversary of NATO membership of the Baltic States organised by the Embassy of Lithuania in Sweden in cooperation with one of the largest non-governmental organisations Society and Defence (Folk och Försvar). Linas Linkevičius reviewed the changes that have taken place in the security policy within the decade and underlined that peace that has been so carefully established in post-war Europe was facing threats today.
