LITHUANIAN AND SWEDISH FOREIGN MINISTERS AGREE THAT EASTERN PARTNERSHIP CONTINUES TO BE IN THE CENTRE OF ATTENTION

At the traditional informal Snow Meeting in Trakai on 10 January, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt and discussed prospects for Eastern Partnership, issues of bilateral cooperation.

During the meeting, the Foreign Ministers jointly opened the virtual tour of the Embassy of Sweden in Lithuania.

The Foreign Ministers exchanged views on opportunities to actively support the Eastern partners’ efforts of rapprochement with the European Union. The conversation focused on decisions taken by the Ukrainian government and EU actions in support of Ukraine’s civil society.

L.Linkevičius thanked Sweden for its support for Lithuania’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council and stressed that he hoped to pave way for closer cooperation between the countries during Lithuania’s term on the Security Council.

The Foreign Ministers discussed international community’s efforts in the Central African Republic (CAR) and the opportunity to participate in the EU’s military operation in the Central African Republic.

The meeting which has gained international recognition  brought together over 40 famous foreign and Lithuanian politicians, officials and experts:  the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Miroslav Lajčák, the Romanian and Swedish Foreign Ministers, the Senator of Poland Bogdan Klich, the NATO Deputy Secretary General Alexander Vershbow, the EU and NATO officials, experts from analytical and research centres, experts on international and security policy, political scientists.
