LITHUANIAN AND RUSSIAN FOREIGN MINISTERS HAD A TELEPHONE CONVERSATION ON THE SETTLEMENT OF PROTRACTED CONFLICTS WITHIN THE OSCE AREA

On 30 March, the Chairperson-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis and Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov had a telephone conversation on joint efforts to resume official negotiations on Transnistrian conflict settlement in the “5+2” format and expressed belief that they would take place as soon as possible.

The “5+2” format comprises the two sides - Moldova and Transnistria - and the mediators: Ukraine, Russia and the OSCE, as well as the United States and the European Union as observers.

Minister A.Ažubalis appreciated activities of Co-Chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, as mediators of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and stressed the importance to build on the positive momentum of the March 5 Sochi summit, which brought together the Presidents of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia.

The Ministers also discussed the Community Security Initiative in Kyrgyzstan, the OSCE Secretary General elections and other relevant items on the agenda of this organization.

Minister A.Ažubalis invited S.Lavrov to mark together the 20th anniversary of the Russian-Lithuanian Treaty of 29 July 1991 on the Foundations of Inter-State Relations. The Ministers agreed to search for appropriate ways to jointly mark this anniversary.
