Lithuanian and Romanian Foreign Ministries to strengthen cooperation

On 18 May, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Romania Lazăr Comănescu signed a protocol for bilateral consultations between Lithuanian and Romanian Foreign Ministries. This protocol provides for regular consultations between the two Foreign Ministries on issues with regard to bilateral cooperation, membership in the European Union and NATO, and other international policy issues.

“The protocol signed with one of Lithuania’s closest partners within the European Union and NATO will give fresh impetus to further improve the bilateral political dialogue and cooperation in different areas, including security and defence, economy, energy, transport, science and technology, and culture,” said Linkevičius.

The protocol provides for regular consultations in order to identify more precisely the potential for bilateral cooperation in these fields, as well as to adjust the countries’ positions on important foreign policy issues of mutual interest.

Romania’s Foreign Minister pays a state visit to Lithuania as part of the official delegation led by the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis. This year, Lithuania and Romania are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations. The countries re-established their diplomatic relations on 13 September 1991.
