Lithuanian and Romanian Foreign Ministers discussed bilateral cooperation, Eastern Partnership and security policy
On 14 January in Vilnius, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Lazăr Comănescu and discussed bilateral cooperation, security policy, the EU’s Eastern Partnership and other issues on the EU agenda.
According to Linkevičius, Lithuania and Romania are very close partners in the fields that are of great importance for the two countries - security policy and the EU’s Eastern Neighbourhood policy.
“We have to continue supporting the EU’s Eastern partners, encouraging them to implement an ambitious reform agenda,” said Lithuania’s Foreign Minister.
Linkevičius also underlined the need to increase support for the countries that had signed Association Agreements with the EU’s Eastern partners – Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia.
The two Foreign Ministers stressed the importance of solidarity among NATO countries and regional cooperation in the implementation of the assurance and adaptation measures that were agreed upon at NATO’s Wales Summit and in the run-up to the Summit in Warsaw.
“There is a need to maintain solidarity among NATO countries and focus on threats from the east and the south, continue to strengthen NATO’s partnerships and implement NATO’s open door policy,” said Linkevičius.
The Romanian Foreign Minister came to Lithuania to participate in the traditional informal ‘Snow Meeting’ of Lithuanian and foreign experts in security policy that kicks off today in Trakai.
