LITHUANIAN AND PORTUGUESE EXPERTS OF ECONOMY DISCUSS COMPETITIVENESS PROMOTION

On 4 December, a round table discussion “Competitiveness of Portuguese and Lithuanian Economies: Promotion of Innovations, Science and Technologies” was hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania.

During the discussion, representatives from Lithuania and Portugal – economists and experts in other fields – discussed promotion of economy competitiveness, Lithuanian and Portuguese experience of implementing innovations in science and business, a role of governments in promoting competitiveness.

At the event, Director of the European Union Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Vidmantas Purlys indicated that promotion of competitiveness by implementing progressive technologies, innovations and creating a knowledge-based society was one of the main ways of strengthening Lithuania’s competitiveness and long-term economy growth. This is especially important today, when the world economy is sinking into recession.

“The experience of Portugal and other EU partners in this area is important for Lithuania, therefore, we are seeking to stimulate cooperation and to exchange the best practice,” said V.Purlys.

Experts from the Portuguese Government presented their National Technology Plan, aimed at the modernization of governance and creation of competitive information society. They also discussed the significance of small and medium businesses and of innovation valleys for securing sustainable economic growth.
