LITHUANIAN AND POLISH FOREIGN MINISTERS DISCUSS BILATERAL COOPERATION

On 21 July in Brussels, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Antanas Valionis and Polish Foreign Minister Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz discussed the partnership between Vilnius and Warsaw in the expanded Euroatlantic area. The ministers agreed to hold consultations next year and to develop a detailed plan of activities after both countries – Lithuania and Poland – would become fully-fledged members of the European Union (EU) and NATO. It is noteworthy that Lithuania and Poland will become members of the named organisations 10 years after signing the bilateral Treaty on Friendly Relations and Good Neighbourly Cooperation. The document was signed on 26 April 1994 and came into force on 26 November of the same year. At the meeting, Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz informed that the Polish Sejm had already ratified the EU Accession Treaty and expressed hope that it would be also easily ratified in the country’s Upper House of Parliament – the Senate. At the meeting, the Lithuanian and Polish foreign ministers exchanged views on the joint Lithuanian-Polish infrastructure projects, which will be discussed in more detail in the session of the Baltic Council of Ministers in September, where Polish Prime Minister Leszek Miller plans to take part. Minister Valionis and Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz who participate in the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council Session in Brussels also discussed the joint defence of common interests in the EU, other topical issues and the implementation of the EU New Neighbours Initiative.
