Lithuanian and Latvian Foreign Ministers discuss EU agenda and bilateral issues in Jūrmala

An informal meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius and the Foreign Minister of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs took place in Jūrmala on 6 September. The Foreign Ministers discussed important issues on the EU agenda, international relations, bilateral cooperation between Lithuania and Latvia.

During the meeting, the Foreign Ministers discussed the situation in the EU due to the growing numbers of migrants from third countries. Linkevičius stressed that Lithuania contributed to the EU’s efforts to address the problem by seriously preparing to properly implement European commitments with respect to the distribution of asylum seekers, and was always ready to show solidarity with other EU member states.

Linkevičius and Rinkēvičs also exchanged views on the latest developments in Ukraine and Belarus, discussed the regional security policy, strategic communication issues. 

As regards the cooperation between Lithuania and Latvia, and promotion of cultural and historical ties, the Foreign Ministers expressed gladness that the two nations would celebrate together the Baltic Unity Day in Rokiškis on 19 September, and that a monument dedicated to the King Mindaugas and the Queen Morta was to be unveiled on 20 September in Aglona, Latvia.
