LITHUANIAN AND GEORGIAN MINISTERS OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS HAD A TELEPHONE CONVERSATION ON THE INCIDENT IN GEORGIA

While visiting Washington on 7 August Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas had a telephone conversation with Georgian Minister of Foreign Affairs Gela Bezhuashvili and discussed the incident, which occurred the previous night in the village of Tsitelubani in Georgia and was noted by the U.N. observers as well.

Georgia's Minister of Foreign Affairs G.Bezhuashvili informed the minister that it was not the first incident of that kind this year.

Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs indicated that such incidents were a matter of concern to Lithuania, as they demonstrated that the existing mechanisms for peace-keeping were insufficient. Minister P.Vaitiekūnas stressed that the international community had to take more active measures to guarantee Georgia's sovereignty and its territorial integrity. In such situations, according to Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, it is most important to face the provocations calmly and to avoid increasing the tension.

Minister P.Vaitiekūnas promised to initiate the discussion on the issue in the European Union and NATO. It is also planned to discuss the issue during the meetings with US officials from the Departments of State and Defence.

During the conversation G. Bezhuashvili confirmed his plans to arrive to the meeting of the New Friends of Georgia, which will be organized in Vilnius on 13 September.

On 6-8 August, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs P.Vaitiekūnas and Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Juozas Olekas are paying a working visit to Washington.
