LITHUANIAN AND GEORGIAN MINISTERS OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS DISCUSSED IMPORTANT ISSUES OF BILATERAL CO-OPERATION IN VILNIUS

On 12 September, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Petras Vaitiekūnas and Georgian Minister of Foreign Affairs Gela Bezhuashvili, currently on on a working visit to Lithuania, discussed the bilateral co-operation between Lithuania and Georgia, Georgia’s relations with the EU and NATO, the solution of “frozen” conflicts, energy security issues, situation in the South Caucasus.   

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia presented the achievements of that country in implementing the Action Plan of the European Neighbourhood Policy and co-operation with NATO under the Individual Partnership Action Plan (I-PAP) as well as the Intensive Dialogue.  

G.Bezhuashvili stressed that his country highly appreciated Lithuania’s consistent support to Georgia, which seeks agreements with the EU regarding the facilitated movement of persons, free trade, and NATO membership.

Speaking about the efforts of Georgia to solve the conflicts in South Ossetia and Abkhasia, the Georgian Foreign Minister underlined that Georgia would continue to seek peaceful regulation of the conflicts and to try not to respond to any provocations. The Minister expressed his gratitude for the prompt reaction of Lithuania to the incident that took place in Georgia on 6 August and for the participation of Lithuanian experts in the investigation of this incident.

The Lithuanian and Georgian Ministers of Foreign Affairs also discussed the solution of the Kosovo problem and its possible effects on the regulation of the conflicts in the South Caucasus.  

P.Vaitiekūnas paid compliments to Georgia for its active participation in regional processes in the South Caucasus and expressed his gratitude for the support of Lithuania’s initiatives in the sector of energy security.  

On 13 September, the President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus received the Georgian Foreign Minister in Vilnius. G.. Bezhuashvili also met with the members of the European Affairs and Foreign Affairs committees of the Seimas.  

On 13 September, G. Bezhuashvili will deliver  a lecture entitled “Georgia’s European Quest: Opportunities and Challenges” at the Institute of International Relations and Political Science of Vilnius University.

On 13-14 September Georgian Minister of Foreign Affairs G.Bezhuashvili will participate at the meeting of ministers of foreign affairs of the countries that form “New Group of Friends of Georgia”. The meeting takes place in Vilnius.
