LITHUANIAN AND CHINESE MINISTERS OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS TO DISCUSS BILATERAL POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC RELATIONS

Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis and Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs Li Zhaoxing, who pays an official visit to Lithuania, discussed bilateral political and economic relations, United Nations reforms.

During the meeting Lithuanian and Chinese cultural cooperation, academic exchange and municipal cooperation were also considered. Lithuanian Foreign minister underlined the necessity to develop economic relations more actively.

“I should say that both sides admit we have good partnership relations, the trade expands and grows, though the potential is still very big,” A. Valionis stated.

A.Valionis noted that Lithuania as a member of the European Union can offer access to a market of 450 million consumers. The Minister invited Chinese businessmen to invest more actively in Lithuania.

Chinese Minister Li Zhaoxing rejoiced at the fact that during the first half of the year the amount of Lithuanian-Chinese trade increased by 18,8 % and encouraged Lithuanian businessmen to be more determined to enter Chinese market. The Minister also stated that China should draw Lithuania’s experience in resolving environmental problems.

The Head of Lithuanian diplomacy also thanked China for supporting Lithuania’s candidacy for UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and asked to support Lithuania during the election of UN  Commission on Human Rights for 2007-2009.

Chinese Foreign Minister presented the country’s position on reforming the United Nations, especially Security Council.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Li Zhaoxing invited A. Valionis to visit China.
