LITHUANIAN AND ARMENIAN FOREIGN MINISTERS OPEN EMBASSY OF ARMENIA IN VILNIUS
On 26 November in Vilnius Lithuanian and Armenian Ministers of Foreign Affairs Audronius Ažubalis and Edward Nalbandian opened Armenian Embassy in Lithuania. In his speech at the event Lithuanian Foreign Minister stressed friendly relations between the countries, expressed support to Armenia’s European integration aspirations and implemented reforms, as well as the need to develop more active business relations.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister said that the embassy was opened in a period important for Lithuania and Armenia because this year marks the twentieth anniversary of establishing of diplomatic relations between the countries. Lithuania was the first country to recognize the independence of Armenia on 14 August, 1991.
During the meeting of ministers organized later, the Head of Lithuanian diplomacy assured his Armenian counterpart of Lithuania's support to more intensive relations between the European Union and Armenia.
“Lithuania welcomes Armenia's progress in negotiations with the EU on the Association Agreement. We are ready to share with you our experience of reforms and European integration and to implement Twinning projects. We hope that negotiations with the European Commission on Armenia’s admission to the EU free trade zone will begin soon,” A.Ažubalis said.
He stressed the importance of direct contacts between people and Lithuania’s support to the fastest possible negotiations on facilitation of travel to the European Union for Armenian citizens.
“We have no doubts, that these steps will accelerate the process of reforms in Armenia and will strengthen the resolution of your people to follow the path of freedom and democracy," the Minister stated.
He also drew attention to not well developed business contacts between the two countries and expressed hope that the establishment of the embassy will stimulate not only business but also cultural and educational ties.
The new Armenian Ambassador to Lithuania Ara Aivazian started work in the Embassy. He presented credentials to the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė on 8 November.
Ara Aivazian is the third Armenian Ambassador to Lithuania. The diplomatic representation was transferred from the Polish capital Warsaw, where Armenian Ambassador to Lithuania until now resided.
Lithuanian Embassy in Armenia was opened on 1 October, 2007. Lithuanian Ambassador Giedrius Apuokas presented his credentials to the President of Armenia on 30 May, 2008.
Lithuania and Armenia recognized each other as independent states by the Treaty of 14 August 1991 on the interstate relations of the Republic of Lithuania and the Republic of Armenia. Diplomatic relations between the countries were established on 21 November, 1991.
