LITHUANIAN AMBASSADOR TO ITALY PRESENTED CREDENTIALS TO THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF THE FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANIZATION OF THE UNITED NATIONS

On 7 May Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to the Italian Republic, the Republic of Malta, the Most Serene Republic of San Marino and the Swiss Confederation Šarūnas Adomavičius presented credentials to Jacques Diouf, the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

During the meeting with the Director-General, Ambassador Š.Adomavičius thanked FAO for their help implementing technical support projects in Lithuanian agriculture, health and environment protection sectors. Ambassador also informed him about Lithuanian activity implementing the Millennium Development Goals and discussed opportunities for holding conferences and workshops of this UN international organization in Lithuania. He also suggested that FAO invite Lithuanian experts to join the projects that are being implemented by the organization and invited Jacques Diouf, the Director-General of FAO to pay a visit to Lithuania.

Director-General of the FAO Jacques Diouf indicated the significance of the long-term Lithuanian-FAO cooperation, asking to continue developing it in the spheres important to this UN organization and promised to consider the possibility of visiting Lithuania.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) was founded in 1945 and is one of the major international organizations of the UN system.

FAO mission is ensuring good nutrition globally. The main goals of the organization are: to raise levels of nutrition and living standards, improve food and other agricultural productivity and distribution, better the lives of rural populations and promote the growth of the world economy defeating the hunger problem of mankind.

Today 190 countries of the world take part in the activities of the organization.

Lithuania joined the FAO in 1991. During this period twenty projects worth 14.5 million Lt were implemented in the agriculture, health and environment protection sectors with the help of the FAO in Lithuania. Today the implementation of those two projects is being finalized: ‘Improving information, communication and knowledge systems for sustainable and organic agriculture’ and ‘Support to the preparation of an operational land consolidation system’.
