LITHUANIAN AMBASSADOR PRESENTS LETTERS OF CREDENCE TO THE PRESIDENT OF ICELAND
On 13 November, Lithuanian Ambassador to Iceland Vytautas Pinkus presented letters of credence to the President of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson.
After and official ceremony, the bilateral relations between Lithuania and Iceland, and the Nordic-Baltic cooperation were discussed. The Ambassador and the President also discussed Lithuania’s on-going energy projects and the aim of achieving energy independence.
Grímsson knows Lithuania well. He has paid two official visits to Lithuania in 2006 and in 2009, when he took part in the commemorative events of the Millennium of Lithuania.
Pinkus, who resides in Copenhagen, is the fifth Ambassador of Lithuania to Iceland.
Lithuania has friendly relations with Iceland, which is at the moment preparing for the EU membership. Iceland is the first foreign country that officially recognized the independence of Lithuania in February 1991. In August 1991, the countries established diplomatic relations.
Lithuania aims to ensure that Iceland concludes its accession negotiations with the European Union during Lithuania’s forthcoming Presidency of the EU Council in the second half of 2013.
