LITHUANIAN AMBASSADOR PRESENTS LETTERS OF CREDENCE TO THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE AFRICAN UNION COMMISSION
On 29th May 2013 Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania Mrs. Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė presented letters of credence to the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma.
Lithuania, during the forthcoming Presidency of the EU will follow EU policies of development and seek closer cooperation with all international and regional organisations, including those based Africa. “We are interested to develop closer bilateral and multilateral relationship with the African countries”, said Lithuanian Ambassador. During the meeting the importance of the African Union as EU partner in dealing with the global conflicts, in peace keeping and building, security sector reform, disarmament and in reducing poverty was underlined.
Ambassador of Lithuania also drew attention to the aspirations of the Republic of Lithuania with its expanding commitments to international peace and security, in seeking a non-permanent seat of UN Security Council for 2014-2015. “We are the only candidate from the Eastern European regional group and we ask for support of the African Union countries”, said Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė.
The African Union (AU) is regional organization uniting 54 countries of the continent (except Morocco). AU seeks political and economic integration of its member states, development, and eradication of poverty, as well as facilitating participation of African countries in the global economy. The key priorities of its activities include formation of united position in dialogue with global community, maintain sovereignty and territorial integrity, work in peace keeping and stability of the continent, deepen economic integration and also deal with the conflicts.
