LITHUANIAN AMBASSADOR PRESENTS LETTERS OF CREDENCE TO DIRECTOR GENERAL OF THE ORGANIZATION FOR THE PROHIBITION OF CHEMICAL WEAPONS
On 9 January, Lithuanian Ambassador in the Netherlands Darius Semaška presented his letters of credence to Director General of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Ahmet Üzümcü and discussed with him further cooperation.
During a conversation after the official ceremony, Semaška and the Director General discussed the organization’s performance in the past year, preparations for the Third Review Conference of the States Parties of the Chemical Weapons Convention, Lithuania’s efforts to raise the issue of the sea-dumped chemical weapons, as well as the coordination of activities of the EU member states within the organization when Lithuania will take over the Presidency of the Council of the EU in six months.
Lithuania is consistently raising the issue of the sea-dumped chemical weapons, e.g., in 2010, the United Nations General adopted the resolution on sea-dumped chemical weapons that was initiated by Lithuania and quite a few international events were organised to discuss this problem.
The OPCW, with headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands, is an inter-governmental organisation that promotes adherence to the Chemical Weapons Convention, which prohibits the use of chemical weapons and requires their destruction.
