LITHUANIAN AMBASSADOR PRESENTED CREDENTIALS TO THE PRESIDENT OF SLOVAKIA
On 30 May Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to the Republic of Austria, the Republic of Slovenia, the Republic of Slovakia, the Republic of Croatia and the Principality of Liechtenstein Giedrius Puodžiūnas presented credentials to President of the Slovak Republic Ivan Gašparovič. During the conversation President I.Gašparovič welcomed good bilateral relations and indicated that Lithuania and Slovakia as the European Union and NATO members have many opportunities for cooperation. According to the President of the Slovak Republic, besides the development of political and economic relations it is necessary to enhance cooperation in the areas of education and culture.
Speaking about the EU Neighbourhood policy, the President stressed that Lithuania was distinguished for its good and well balanced relations with the neighbouring countries. Ambassador G.Puodžiūnas indicated that Lithuania and Slovakia are the EU border countries, therefore, strengthening relations with the neighbouring countries in the East has to be one of the priority areas of their cooperation.
During the conversation President I.Gašparovič extended his compliments to President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus and was gratified to be able to welcome the President of Lithuania during his state visit to Slovakia in 2008.
Ambassador G.Puodžiūnas is the third Lithuanian Ambassador to the Slovak Republic residing in Vienna.
Lithuania and Slovakia established diplomatic relations on 6 January, 1993.
