LITHUANIAN AMBASSADOR PRESENTED CREDENTIALS TO THE PRESIDENT OF MONTENEGRO

On 26 July Lithuanian Ambassador to the Republic of Hungary, the Republic of Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and to the Republic of Montenegro Darius Jonas Semaška presented credentials to President of the Republic of Montenegro Filip Vujanović.

During the meeting ambassador D.Semaška and President F.Vujanović discussed the potential of the development of bilateral relations between Lithuania and Montenegro in the areas of politics, economy and other, and the European integration choice of Montenegro. Montenegro is actively interested in Lithuania’s experience of its integration into the EU and NATO. President F.Vujanović expects that the experience of our country shall expedite Montenegro on its path of integration. Ambassador D.Semaška indicated that Lithuania not only welcomed and supported the aspirations of Montenegro, but was also ready to share its practical experience of integration into the EU and NATO.

In Ambassador’s opinion, the implementation of Montenegro’s European integration reforms shall attract attention of Lithuanian businessmen to this country. Currently Montenegro has population of 600,000 and is a country receiving hundreds of millions euros of investments.

During the meeting of D.Semaška with the representative from the Ministry for Economic Development, the sectors of transport, tourism and energy, into which Montenegro would expect Lithuania’s investments most, were presented. It is anticipated that Lithuanian businessmen should seize the opportunity of getting more actively interested in business possibilities in Montenegro, particularly because Lithuanian companies are already working in the region.

During the conversation with Ambassador, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro Irena Radović presented the most important issues in politics, economy and international relations of Montenegro and stressed that Lithuania’s experience and its positive example shall contribute to strengthening stability in the Western Balkan region.

The Deputy Minister also expressed hope that Lithuania along with other EU Member States should have one opinion on the issue of Kosovo and the problem should be solved not unilaterally but by reaching consensus, that being especially important to Montenegro as Kosovo’s neighbouring country.

On the agenda of the visit of Lithuanian Ambassador to Montenegro there is one more meeting scheduled with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro Milan Roćen.

Ambassador D.Semaška is the first Lithuanian Ambassador to Montenegro residing in Budapest. Montenegro separated from Serbia and declared the independence after the referendum in 2006.
