LITHUANIAN AMBASSADOR PRESENTED CREDENTIALS TO THE PRESIDENT OF MALTA
On 18 November in Valletta, Ambassador of Lithuania to Italy Petras Zapolskas presented his credential letters to President of Malta George Abela. Perspectives for closer economic cooperation between Lithuania and Malta were discussed during the conversation that followed the ceremony. The interlocutors emphasized that it was necessary to pay attention to the promotion of people-to-people contacts.
President G.Abela thanked Lithuania for the country’s support in solving the issue of the establishment of the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) in Malta. Lithuania was among the 22 European Union member states that supported the nomination of Malta.The President and the Ambassador also spoke about the possibilities to have regular flights from Malta’s capital city Valletta to Vilnius.
When speaking about cooperation in the field of culture, the President of Malta took interest in the Lithuanian music, invited the Lithuanian Symphony Orchestra to give a concert in Malta and promised to find a concert hall for such a concert.
On 17 November, Ambassador P.Zapolskas discussed the issues of cooperation between Lithuania and Malta with Chairman of the Standing Committee on Foreign and European Affairs of the House of Representatives of Malta (Parliament) Francis Zammit Dimech, opposition’s spokesman Leo Brincat and Ambassador of Malta to Lithuania Laurence Grech.
On 19 November in Valletta, Ambassador P.Zapolskas is holding meetings with Maltese Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta Tonio Borg.
Lithuania and Malta established diplomatic relations on 7 February 1994.
Ambassador P.Zapolskas, who resides in Italy, is the third Ambassador of Lithuania accredited to Malta.
