LITHUANIAN AMBASSADOR PRESENTED CREDENTIALS TO THE PRESIDENT OF IRAN
On 19 May, in Tehran, Lithuanian Ambassador Darius Pranckevičius presented credentials to the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. During the conversation after the official ceremony, Ambassador D.Pranckevičius indicated that Lithuania was interested in continuing the dialogue with Iran, in developing the economic and cultural cooperation and in promoting tourism and student exchange.
‘Lithuania, as a Member State of the European Union, steps with this organisation in forming relations with Iran,’ said Ambassador D.Pranckevičius.
Having congratulated the new Lithuanian Ambassador, the head of state of Iran emphasized that Iran was interested in developing relations with Lithuania.
During the conversation with the President of Iran, possibilities to benefit from the potential of cooperation, particularly in the areas of science and research, were discussed.
In 1930, the Treaty of Friendship between the Republic of Lithuania and the Persian Empire was signed. In 1991, Iran confirmed that it held this Treaty effective. The diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Iran were re-established on 10 October 1993.
In 2007, export of Lithuania to Iran was 2,3 million Litas. Lithuania exports to Iran various chemicals, electric gadgets and their parts, optical and medical equipment, etc.
In 2007, import of Lithuania from Iran amounted to 37,6 million Litas. Since 2006, import of Lithuania from Iran has increased by 76 %. Predominantly, Lithuania has imported dried fruit and nuts from Iran.
In 2007, the turnover of trade between Lithuania and Iran was 40 million Litas.
Ambassador D.Pranckevičius resides in Ankara, Turkey. He is the second Lithuanian Ambassador accredited to Iran.
