LITHUANIAN AMBASSADOR PRESENTED CREDENTIALS TO THE PRESIDENT OF BELARUS

On 13 February Lithuanian ambassador Edminas Bagdonas presented his credentials to the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko. During the ceremony the President of Belarus marked that Lithuania was a neighbour state, which shared its history and a long border with Belarus. Therefore, it was necessary to cooperate in all spheres of policy, economy and culture. A.Lukashenko also stated that Belarus was ready to cooperate constructively.

On 12 February Lithuanian ambassador E.Bagdonas met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Sergei Martynov. E.Bagdonas suggested that a more active approach should be taken towards the creation of bilateral transport infrastructure development projects, notably road traffic, railway, navigation (including river navigation) projects and emphasized how important it was to finish the border demarcation.

Possibilities to improve the working conditions for Lithuanian businessmen in Belarus as well as possibilities to provide investment guarantees were discussed during the meeting. Moreover, the two officials exchanged their opinions on the plans of work of the institutions in both countries, including the preparations for the 12th meeting of the bilateral economic cooperation commission of Lithuania and Belarus.

S.Martynov indicated that Lithuania and Belarus are closest neighbours, and should find effective ways to cooperate.

Ambassador E.Bagdonas assured that he would pursue to develop economic and cultural cooperation between the two countries. The solution of issues related to the travels of citizens between both countries would also be high on the agenda, ambassador said.
