LITHUANIAN AMBASSADOR PRESENTED CREDENTIALS TO THE HEAD OF THE UNITED NATIONS OFFICE IN VIENNA
On 12 November, Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the International Organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Giedrius Puodžiūnas presented credentials to Director-General of the United Nations Office in Vienna Yury Fedotov.Ambassador G.Puodžiūnas and Y.Fedotov, who is also the Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), discussed an active and effective cooperation between Lithuania and the UNODC in addressing drug prevention issues in Lithuania.
The Ambassador thanked the UNODC for supporting the implementation of drug prevention projects in Lithuania.Y.Fedotov positively evaluated Lithuania’s efforts to implement a drug prevention programme in Afghanistan. Although opium production in Afghanistan this year plunged by nearly half from 2009 level, it still remains a very thorny subject for the international community.
The UN representative highlighted that it was necessary to strengthen international cooperation in fighting against Afghanistan’s illicit opium production and their illegal transportation from this country. Bulk of Afghanistan’s opium production spreads in the world through Pakistan, Central Asia and Iran.
The Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the International Organizations in Vienna is also the Lithuanian Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency, United Nations Industrial Development Organization, Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization and the Ambassador of Lithuanian to Austria, Croatia, Slovakia and Liechtenstein.
