LITHUANIAN AMBASSADOR PRESENTED CREDENTIALS TO THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL OF NEW ZEALAND

On 11 December in Auckland, Lithuanian Ambassador Dainius Kamaitis presented credentials to Anand Satyanand, the Governor-General of New Zealand. During the conversation with the Governor-General of New Zealand, a visit of President of the Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus in 2006 was remembered and various aspects of bilateral relations were discussed. The significance of exchange between the nations was indicated, and  A.Satyanand reiterated an intention to seek that in the nearest future an agreement should be concluded under the leave-of-absence programme, which would allow the youth from one country to live and work in another country for a period of up to 12 months.

Moreover, during the conversation the interlocutors also welcomed the successful contribution of both countries to guaranteeing peace and security in the world, and particularly in Afghanistan.

Bilateral trade turnover between Lithuania and New Zealand amounted to 75.4 million Litas for the first three quarters of 2008. The list of goods of export from Lithuania was dominated by chemicals, and wool accounted for over half of import from New Zealand.

On the eve of presentation of credentials, D.Kamaitis met with members of Lithuanian community in Auckland, chaired by Gerald Sharrock.

Ambassador D.Kamaitis, who resides in Tokyo, is the first Lithuanian Ambassador accredited to New Zealand. Besides, there is a Consulate in Auckland, New Zealand, headed by Lithuanian Honorary Consul Jurgis Pečiulaitis.

New Zealand’s Ambassador to Lithuania resides in Warsaw.

Lithuania and New Zealand established diplomatic relations on 10 January 1992.
