LITHUANIAN AMBASSADOR PRESENTED CREDENTIALS TO DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS OFFICE IN VIENNA
On 2 September, Lithuanian Ambassador to international organisations in Vienna Renatas Norkus presented credentials to Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Maria Costa. A.M.Costa is also Director-General of the United Nations Office in Vienna (UNOV) and Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). During the conversation, perspectives of cooperation in order to guarantee drug control and to facilitate the implementation of the UN mechanisms to curb corruption, organised crime and human trafficking, were discussed. In this context, Ambassador R.Norkus highlighted the significance of cooperation between the UN Office on Drugs and Crime and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Lithuania is to chair the Organization for Security and Co-Operation in Europe in 2011.
The interlocutors also discussed cooperation in Ghor Province, Afghanistan, where the UN Office on Drugs and Crime project for strengthening the capacity of the police is under the implementation. The project is estimated at about 400,000 EUR and financed by Lithuania and the European Commission.
The possibility of cooperation on the implementation of the abovementioned project was agreed during the meeting between Lithuania’s President Valdas Adamkus and Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime A.M.Costa on 8 March 2007 in Vienna.
Ambassador R.Norkus is the fourth Lithuanian Ambassador to international organisations in Vienna after the re-establishment of Lithuania’s Independence.
