Lithuanian Ambassador to international organisations in Vienna Rytis Paulauskas met with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Mohamed ElBaradei.
During the meeting the Ambassador acquainted the IAEA Head with Lithuania’s decision to stop the first block of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) on 31 December 2004.
R. Paulauskas thanked for implementation of Agency’s projects in Lithuania and for support in suspending operation of the INPP first block. Within two years IAEA allocated in Lithuania more than 280 thousand U.S. dollars.
IAEA Director General ensured that Agency’s support projects in Lithuania will be continued as well as the Baltic region energy study.
R. Paulauskas and M. ElBaradei discussed IAEA actions in implementation of the IAEA Board of Governors resolution on Iran adopted on 29 November.
In this resolution the Board welcomes Iran’s decision to suspend production of the nuclear materials and asks the Director General to supervise the implementation of this decision. The Iran nuclear program issues will be deliberated in March and June 2005.
