LITHUANIAN AMBASSADOR GIVES A LECTURE TO STUDENTS IN THE U.S. ON LITHUANIA’S OSCE CHAIRMANSHIP EXPERIENCE

On 13 February, Ambassador-at-Large of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Rytis Paulauskas gave a lecture entitled “Lithuania's OSCE Chairmanship: Political Leadership and Management of Regional Organization” at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in Boston.

Paulauskas stressed Lithuania’s role in ensuring security in the vast Euro-Atlantic and Eurasian space and efforts to address protracted conflicts.

“Only joint efforts of diplomats, academic community and civil society can enable the achievement of a real breakthrough in settling conflicts in Moldova and in the Southern Caucasus - Georgia and Nagorno-Karabakh. The support of U.S. academic institutions in providing the analysis of processes, offering various models of negotiation and training future leaders is very important to our region,” Paulauskas said.

He also outlined the achievements of Lithuania’s OSCE Chairmanship in the fields of cyber-security, human rights and fundamental freedoms, freedom of the media and safety of journalists. An academic discussion on prospects of the role of the OSCE followed.

Professor of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy Ian Johnstone, at whose initiative this lecture was organized, and students of Tufts University took interest in Lithuania’s attitude towards the ongoing processes in the European Union, the impact of the global financial crisis on the EU and Lithuanian economy, the role of the U.S. in Central Asia and relations of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization with other regional organizations.

The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy was founded in 1933 in Boston. The school accepts around 300 students per year and offers about 100 programmes in international relations and diplomacy.
