LITHUANIA WILL HOST REGIONAL CONFERENCE ON ADVANCEMENT OF OTTAWA CONVENTION

This June Lithuania will host in Vilnius a regional conference on advancing the 1997 Ottawa Convention on the prohibition of anti-personnel landmines in Northern and Eastern Europe. Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the United Nations office in Geneva, Ambassador A.Rimkūnas, has presented this week the outlines of the Vilnius conference at the intersessional meeting of the states parties to Ottawa Convention that takes place in Geneva. Being the first in North-Eastern Europe to ratify the Ottawa Convention in 2003, Lithuania has carried on as an ambassador of good will for the universalization of the prohibition on anti-personnel landmines. Many of the states from the region are strongly committed to assistance and cooperation for international mine action. However, the region itself faces big challenges of stockpile destruction or review of military doctrines. The Vilnius conference will be one of the many events taking place this year around the world in the lead up to the November First Review Conference of the Ottawa Convention to be held in Nairobi.
