LITHUANIA WAITS FOR OBJECTIVE AND THOROUGH ASSESSMENT ON THE EURO INTRODUCTION

Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Antanas Valionis stressed that country’s possibility to introduce the Euro should not be affected by the assessment methods used by the European Commission’s experts.

“The assessment should be based on the Treaty on European Union, not on the red tape logic,” the Head of Lithuanian Diplomacy, who took part in the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council (GAERC) meeting in Brussels on 15 May, marked.

According to Minister Valionis, economic but not political arguments show that Lithuania is ready for the Euro zone.

This opinion had been voiced before the Report of the European Commission on Lithuania’s readiness to introduce the Euro on 1st January 2007 was published on 16 May.

During the GAERC meeting the Ministers discussed preparations for the European Council on 15-16 June that should address the future of the EU.

During the External Relations session preparations for the EU-Russia Summit in Sochi on 24 May were discussed. The EU Foreign Ministers also addressed the situation in the Near East, Iraq, Iran, conflicts in Africa, EU relations with the West Balkans.

Before  the GAERC meeting Lithuanian Foreign Minister invited his counterparts from Northern and Baltic states to a traditional meeting, where the EU future, relations with Russia and Belarus and the countries of the Near East were touched upon. Minister Valionis also met with the new Foreign Minister of Sweden Jan Eliasson and acquainted him with Lithuania‘s preparations for Euro adoption and discussed the United Nations reform.
