LITHUANIA VOICES SUPPORT FOR GEORGIA’S EURO-ATLANTIC ASPIRATIONS AT A MEETING OF NATO MINISTERS OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

At a meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs on 5 December in Brussels, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Vytautas Leškevičius discussed Georgia’s progress toward NATO membership and stressed Lithuania’s support for the country’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations.

At the meeting of the NATO-Georgia Commission, representatives from the member countries of the Alliance met with Georgia’s new Foreign Minister Maya Pandzhikidze. It was noted that the parliamentary elections in this country ran smoothly. Georgia was encouraged to continue a peaceful transfer of power and ensure the rule of law.

Leškevičius drew attention to the necessity of a constructive interaction between the branches of government and invited Georgia’s new administration to ensure equal standards of justice for all.

The Vice-Minister also welcomed Georgia’s democratic progress and encouraged the new Government to further integrate into NATO.

“Lithuania welcomes Georgia’s considerable progress in the field of reforms and its significant contribution to NATO operation in Afghanistan. This is a very important element of our partnership, which shows Georgia’s determination to strengthen its cooperation with NATO. We invite our allies to further develop relations with Georgia and to strengthen the interaction between NATO and Georgia. It should speed up the implementation of decisions taken in Bucharest,” Leškevičius said.
